Baluchari saree was brought to light in West Bengal, 500 years ago. It got its name from its place of origin, Baluchar, a small village in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Baluchari saree is known for its complex patterns and contrasting weave. It can easily be identified from the construction of long pallu and placement of its design motifs in perfect rectangular closed corners that maintains continuity of the designs without break. Baluchari Sarees are traditionally woven in dark shades of reds, greens, greys, etc. Baluchari Silk Saree is an exclusive GI of West Bengal and was awarded a GI certification in the year 2011.
