Pattachitra = Patta (cloth) + Chitra (painting). Pattachitra - a Sanskrit word, for the style of Hand Painting that originated in Odisha, India.

Patta- In Odisha Pattachitra the main or major part is Patta. A piece of cotton cloth is glued with the help of a mixture of glue and chalk made from tamarind seeds. The Patta becomes hard by sticking two surfaces.

Color- Pattachithra paintings use a limited set of colors as Red, Yellow, Indigo, Black, and White. The Chitrakar (painter) creates their own colors as Red color comes from Cinnabar  (Hingula), Yellow Color comes from Orpiment (Haritala), Indigo color comes from Ramraja (a kind of Neel), White color comes from Shell (Shankh), Black color from Burning Coconut Husks (Kajal).

Brush- Hair of Rat Or Mongoose’s  Tail has been used for filling color in this art.

Chitra- These paintings are based on Hindu mythology as Mahabharata, Ramayana, Krishna Raasleela, Lord Jagannath, and Lord Ganesha and are especially inspired by Jagannath and Vaishnava sects.
