Venkatagiri sarees are generally made of cotton, silk mix, pure silk that are
weaved mostly on the traditional pit looms. These sarees are mostly woven with
the art of Jamdani weaving followed by about 14 generations. Venkatagiri Saree is a saree style woven in Venkatagiri of Nellore district in the Indian state of
Andhra Pradesh. It was registered as one of the geographical indications from
Andhra Pradesh by the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999.
It is famous for handlooms, and its weavers have adopted the fine Jamdhani
weaving technique while assimilating traditional designs of the region, such as
the artwork in this tapestry that shows the Kalpavriksh tree and the Kamadhenu
cow, which is regarded as auspicious and bestowed of prosperity. Borders have
plain Zari stripe without additional warp design Small additional weft design
in the main section and pallu with zari add beauty to the Venkatagiri saree.
Commonly it is light-colored lightweight and soft to touch since very little
designing is done and also less starch is put on yarns. The tapestry is woven
using very fine cotton yarn and pure gold thread, with both the warp and the
weft having the same count of cotton yarn. It takes 3-4 months to weave each
product.
