Ghazipur jute wall hanging - GI Tagged Product of Uttar Pradesh

Ghazipur Wall Hanging holds a prominent position in the decentralized handicraft cluster. It provides direct and indirect employment to approx 5000 artisans. Today wall hanging is famous throughout India and other foreign countries for their exquisite design, variety, and craftsmanship. The Saidpur cluster in district Ghazipur is at approx 40 km from Varanasi. Ghazipur Wall Hanging joined the league of Geographical Indication (GI) in 2018.

The wall hangings of Ghazipur, which are known for their unique designs, weaving, and craftsmanship, are one of Uttar Pradesh's most stunning handicrafts. More than 3000 families are involved in this centuries-old skill in the villages of Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Varanasi, and Chandauli.

About Ghazipur wall Hangings

Ghazipur wall hangings are handcrafted interior decor pieces made in the small Uttar Pradesh city of Ghazipur. These traditional handloom goods are weaved by expert artisans utilising a colour palette that includes a variety of hues. They use a variety of yarns, such as jute and cotton, to provide not only strength but also a unique texture. The usage of various textures is also an element of the patterning and design presentation.

These handwoven Ghazipur wall ornamental hangings have a wide appeal due to their exquisite patterning, colours, and designs. From representations of Hindu gods and goddesses to intricate and precise landscape artworks with patterns of buildings, lawns, forests, interiors, birds and animals, the weavers' skill is evident in a wide range of designs.

Plant fibre, often known as golden or jute fibre, is obtained naturally. It is a non-toxic, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly material. Around 60 villages in Ghazipur, with approximately 4000 poor artists, produce one of India's most unique arts: jute wall hangings. Without using a single hazardous waste producing item, artists and their families produce soft de-colored yarn from jute, traditional dyeing of yarn, weaving on old pit-looms, patching Kela Silk, paper, and beads for designs.

The end result of this laborious task is enchanting sceneries of Indian village life, flora and fauna, landscapes, and much more for the decoration of your drawing room, offices, commercial hall, hotel room, and conference hall, among other places.

GI products of Varanasi - Ghazipur History &  wall hanging

In 2018, the Geographical Indication Tag (GI) was awarded to the Ghazipur wall hanging. The cluster of artists who have worked to preserve the originality of this handloom product have continued to use age-old designs and a traditional weaving procedure from start to finish.

Ghazipur, India's opium capital, is located 75–80 kilometres north-east of Varanasi, on the western bank of the Ganga. Varanasi's district is divided into subdivisions. Ghazipur is India's only city where opium is grown lawfully for therapeutic purposes. The city has historical relevance as the birthplace of Maharshi Yamdgni, an old sage, as lauded in Vedic literature.

Ghazipur is also linked to Buddhism, as a 30ft high Ashokan pillar can be discovered at Zamania tehsil, nearly 16km from Ghazipur town. Hsuan Tsang (629 AD), a famous Chinese traveller, named this location Chen-Chu, which means "lord of struggle or combat" in Chinese.

A total of 60 communities in the district of Ghazipur manufacture one of India's GI ornamental arts, known as golden fibre wall-hangings. Making wall-hangings out of jute fibre is a handicraft that has been passed down from generation to generation. There isn't a single dangerous ingredient or technique employed in the creation of the artwork, and each piece takes over a month to complete. The designs are inspired by village life, flora and fauna, gods and goddesses, landscapes, and so on.

Ghazipur Wall Hanging Producing Technique

To make white and silky de-colored yarn, raw jute of natural colour is bleached to discolour it. Jute is coloured in various hues using traditional processes. Weaving is done on 5-foot-long pit-looms. The surplus yarn is trimmed and polished after weaving. Patching of kela-silk (Art silk) yarn, velvet paper, and beads is done as the final step of the production procedure to make the design and adorn the hanging to give it a lovely look. Motifs & Designs- These craftspeople create a wide range of designs. Landscapes are the most popular designs. The designs are produced to order and are tailored to the needs of the customers.

Raw Material Used in making of wall-hangings

The artists make these unique designs using an ancient Banaras weaving technique called naka jala taka, which is noted for its organic appeal and aesthetic presentation. Jute, cotton, silk, and cloth are used to build Hindu Gods and Goddesses, forests, birds, animals, and dwellings.

Making of Traditional Wall Hangings

These are traditional handloom items manufactured without the use of jacquard using a blend of jute yarn and other yarns in a variety of colours and strengths. To obtain white and soft discoloured yarn, natural yarns are bleached using traditional methods. Hot (dark colours) and cold (light colours) water are used in the dyeing process (light colours).

The tana (warp) is prepared for weaving once the yarn has dried. Bana (weft) of various colours is arranged according to the design. Bana of various shades and colours are blended and mixed by hand with tana to make the designs stand out. Pit looms are used to weave.

Extra threads and yarn are trimmed away, and the jute wall hanging is held in place for the embroidery. Silk and jute are used to embroider new motifs and designs that cannot be woven. Branches of trees, flower motifs, and leaves are commonly embroidered patterns. The next step in the rapping process is to create roofs, bridges, boats, and carts. Windows are created during the patching procedure.
