Bengal Patachitra is one of the oldest forms of paintings in India. The word Patachitra means ‘Patta: Canvas’ and ‘Chitra: Picture’. Patachitra art is mainly painted on fabric or paper using naturally acquired colors. The motifs are inspired by Indian mythology and folktales.

Bengal Patachitra is an Exclusive GI of West Bengal and was awarded a GI certification in the year 2018.

Bengal Patachitra is one of the oldest forms of art and has been in practice for more than 2000 years now, native to the Medinipur region. The use of naturally derived colors on fabric or paper makes this art form eco-friendly. Traditionally, 5 basic colors are used for these paintings, namely, white, yellow, brown, black, and indigo. The brushes that are used by these 'Chitrakaras' or the artisans are also indigenous and are made of the hair of domestic animals.
