Thanjavur painting is a classical South Indian painting style, which was inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur. Thanjavur paintings are characterized by rich and vivid colours, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work, and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems. The special aspect of this painting is that the gold foil is literally used for twin purposes: it adds glitter to the painting and makes it more attractive and also protects and prolongs the life of the paintings. Foils are made of 22-carat Gold, look almost similar to genuine gold, thus making it difficult for consumers to know the difference.
