The mountainous bananas give their name and distinct flavor to the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu in the southern part of the Indian peninsula. Virupakshi hill banana is found only in Palani hills in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. It has always grown as a shady tree for young coffee. With coffee being a long-term crop, it was Virupakshi banana that brought cash to farmers in remote and hilly areas of the Palaura hills and has been a reliable crop for the farmers there. Geographical indication registration is obtained for Virupakshi mountain banana varieties in 2008.
