The Shantiniketan region in West Bengal is famous for its beautifully handcrafted leather handbags and other leather accessories. Santiniketan leathercraft uses embossed batik work and traditional patterns and is very different from the usual leather bags. The products are made from vegetable-tanned skins. Vegetable-tanned sheep or goat skins are the main raw material of the products. This purse is a classic example of age-old Shantiniketan craft which was introduced in West Bengal, India during the 1940s. The traditional motifs used for these Shantiniketan bags depict the rich cultural heritage of India.
